In contemporary animation, it's rare to leave out detail in backgrounds, but they used to do it all the time. I'm copying a trick they used in Bambi here--they used oil and just smeared into the distance. Very atmospheric!

I respond most to the pictures with the most convincing sense of space, the 1st, 3rd, and 5th . I think the value range and contrast in the third painting is really nice and to me this makes it stand out as the strongest piece. Also, there is clarity in what you were trying to do in the painting, which is lacking in some of the others.
i think the bambi "smearing" effect is working..I'd like to see it play off of some more realistically rendered volumes in the foreground. Like in the fifth painting, I'm wanting to see some chunkiness in the snow on the branches of the foreground tree...some shadows would enhance the "snowness" of the snow and the feeling of stillness on this snowy night.
then again, don't you have to do like ten thousand of these things? considering that I'm being too nitpicky..
ugh, don't have a margarita and a whole box of mac and cheese with broccoli and extra cheese and expect to feel peppy afterwards!
